Citizens Constitutional Convention
Support a citizens constitutional convention to propose changes that reform the legislature via a delegation that represents the diversity of all Californians.
Why call a citizens constitutional convention?
California is the world's eighth-largest economy. State government is in a state of paralysis, caused by systemic problems in the governance structure of the State.
The current Constitution was drafted over one hundred years ago, and has been amended more than 500 times to a point where its original intent is no longer recognizable, and its
implementation is no longer feasible.
The twenty-first century requires a twenty-first century constitution, one that allows for reform of the legislature in order to reduce the influence of special interest groups, provides for needed limits on budgeting and spending, ensures reduced bureaucracy, and restores the balance of power between the state and local governments.
What is the expected outcome of the convention?
Calls convention to propose changes to state Constitution related to government, state spending and budgeting, elections and lobbying.
Provides that proposed changes to constitution or laws become effective only after approved by voters in statewide election. Forbids changes to taxes or fees, marriage, abortion, gambling, affirmative action, freedom of the press or religion, immigration rights, and the death penalty.
Establishes rules for selecting convention delegates to reflect a diverse range of citizens.
Requires selection of delegates and conduct of convention to be open and public.
Why I support the citizens constituional convention?
That is the promise of a constitutional convention. The convention will be a celebration of our democracy and our state's incredible diversity. John Adams said of gatherings like conventions that they "should be in miniature an exact portrait of the people at large. It should think, feel, reason, and act like them."
It is time to believe in California and its people. Its citizens have conquered so many aspects of business, technology, the arts, academia and science - we certainly can gather this special group of humanity together to create a government that works. We can do better.
